FIRE INDUSTRY TRAININGOverview
This qualification applies to fire protection technicians responsible for non-trade installation and regular servicing of fire protection equipment and systems.
Fire protection technicians may specialise in activities relating to certain groups of equipment or systems, such as:
- inspect and test fire protection equipment in the field
- install & maintain, test and refill extinguishers in the workshop
- inspect, test and maintain passive fire and smoke containment products and systems
- inspect and test fire detection and warning systems
- inspect & test emergency & exit lighting systems
This course is not a training course, rather an assessment of the skills you already have.
Course Details
Entry Requirements
It is recommended that participants have:
- Previous experience in the fire industry & an intermediate level of numeracy, literacy and computer skills
Please note, prior to enrolling into Post Trade Courses, it is expected of you to already have access to current Australian Standards applicable to the relevant field of operation.
For your convenience, the College provides relevant Standards while you are attending any Workshops. These Standards must remain on the College premises.

Duration and Delivery Mode
This assessment only program is delivered in a flexible arrangement, incorporating online assessment with a two day practical assessment at our Salisbury Campus (South Brisbane).
- 2 Days – 7:00am to 3:00pm.
For Licence Class Maintain-extra low voltage:
- Extra 7 days – 7:00am to 3:00pm will be required, this practical will be held at our Brendale Campus (North Brisbane).
As a guide only, you should set aside between four to six months to complete this course.
Resources required
Personal protective equipment:
- long sleeve cotton drill shirts and long cotton drill pants, or overalls (no nylon)
- protective footwear steel capped (AS/NZ 2210)
- clear safety glasses or clip-ons, if prescription glasses are normally worn (AS/NZ 1336 or 1337)
- ear protection – ear muffs or plugs (AS/NZ 1269 or 1270)
- Safety gloves
Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry in to practical classes.

Assessment
Assessments for Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection & Testing is in a form of online-multiple choice questions per unit chosen. Upon completion of the online assessment, students are required to book in for the practical assessment at the College.
Practical assessments correspond with the theoretical online assessment. Knowledge exercised through online assessment is confirmed by hands-on demonstrations using state of the art equipment here at the College. The practical assessments are:
- Available twice per month
- Two full days duration
Outcomes
On successful completion of all assessment requirements for all units of competency (core and elective), participants will be issued with Certificate II in Fire Protection Inspection & Testing. Successful completion of individual units of competency will result in the issuance of a Statement of Attainment for the relevant units. Successful completion of this course will allow the participant to apply to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission for the applicable Fire occupational Licence classes listed opposite:
